Energy Company Obligation (ECO)

ECO was introduced by the UK Government to fund energy efficiency measures. It requires the big six energy suppliers (British Gas, Scottish Power, EDF, SSE, EON and Npower) to help householders save on their energy bills and carbon emissions. Many Scottish households have benefited from energy efficiency measures provided by the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and backed by Scottish Government programmes, such as the energy saving home improvements initiatives, that were designed to use Scottish Government funding to attract further investment under the ECO.

Who are the providers of the ECO Grant funding?

Although ECO is a government energy efficiency scheme, it is not the Scottish or UK governments who pay for ECO 4 grants in Scotland. What the government has done is to place an obligation on those ‘Big Six’ companies to provide the Grant money so that a large number of UK homes can improve their energy ratings.

That is why FREE SOLAR PANELS are now available through the ECO4 grant scheme in Scotland. If you are on certain benefits, you may be eligible for a 100% grant to pay for solar panels and a number of other cost saving measures.

If your property has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G, your electricity bills are likely to be high in proportion to the average wage. It means that you could qualify for a variety of cost/energy saving measures, such as new boiler system, loft insulation, solar and battery storage and Air Source Heat Pumps with an ECO4 grant.

You can check your EPC rating on the Energy Savings Trust website here: https://www.scottishepcregister.org.uk/CustomerFacingPortal/EPCPostcodeSearch

Many of the properties involved are likely to have inefficient heating like old-style electric heaters, oil boilers, and LPG central heating; and many of them will be in rural locations.
