Solar is one of the various types of Renewable Energy which has become more mainstream over the last few years. This free light and therefore energy comes from the sun  and we are learning to use it in a number of ways. The three ways shown here are the most commonly used methods.

Solar Thermal (ST)

In this instance, the direct heat from the sun is used to heat a liquid (often water or oil) which is contained within a sealed metal tube. The hot liquid is then used to heat water in a storage tank, such as an immersion tank in a house.

Solar PhotoVoltaic (PV)

‘Solar Photovoltaic’ is the term used to describe the panels which have become more commonplace on roofs and on the ground. This electricity generation is done by using photovoltaic cells that are made from semiconductor materials that are combined to make panels of different sizes and capacities.
